To begin, Kindle doesn’t inherently offer page numbers on older models. For most Kindles, they will only see a percentage of completion that doesn’t really correlate with page numbers well.

Dear Apple Friends,

I have a pretty candid and straightforward question about iBooks and I'm hoping some who have used it for a while can help me out here.

Kindle

I normally use my Kindle for my e-books but have been finding some books on the iBook Store that I'd like to buy for my iPad. Onenote in teams. I e-mailed iTunes my questions and they cannot seem to give me a straight answer so I thought I would try here next.

  • Do e-books on the iBook Store (iBS) use static location numbers, or are they dynamic based on the page, text size, etc?
  • Are there 'real page numbers,' or page numbers that correspond with the print version of the book? (Kindle has this, I use it a lot for research stuff). I cannot find a mention of it anywhere on anything.
  • What sort of 'return policy' does Apple provide on the iBS? Like I said, I cannot find a straight answer on this and iTunes Customer Support has not given me a straight answer. I'd just like to know if I buy an e-book and it has typos (this has happened a lot on Kindle) in it or the quality is just very poor, what are my options for returning the book?

Many thanks, in advance.

John

APNX files are often distributed by Amazon alongside with purchased ebooks in the AZW format. These files are used on Amazon Kindle devices and have first been introduced with the 3.1 version. They are known as pagination files. Especially for scientific work, this comes in handy since the page numbers on an ebook do not often match the one of the original book or paper. With the help of the APNX files, referencing the correct site number became possible by having the electronic version only.

Technical details of APNX files

APNX files help to map the page number of an Amazon Kindle ebook (most commonly in the AZW format) to the page number of the original, printed book. Users of the Amazon Kindle are thus able to see the correctly mapped page number on their device while reading. These APNX files are saved on the Kindle directly. It is not advised to open and edit these files manually.
